Refire…Don’t Retire

For many, many years man lived without retirement.  Now many people can’t wait until they can “retire”.  Unfortunately, I’ve observed, many of them lose their vibrancy, curiosity and interest in learning new things when they do retire.

When I was considering retiring I looked at the word “retire” and realized it wasn’t what I wanted to so.  I had learned that I’m only here once….there are no dress rehearsals ….and there are no do overs.  Because of my focus (since I was 27 years old) to creatively capitalize on my gifts and talents where they would take me I’ve enjoyed my “work”.  I feel it’s what’s kept me alive, vibrant and open to learn new things. Each choice is a chance to do something different and make a contribution in a new and different way.

To do this I’ve created another view of work.  Many people have lived their life not enjoying work.  Yet when we “work” in the garden, on our cars or on our house it can be quite pleasurable. The trick is to make “work” enjoyable….an activity where you get satisfaction and fulfillment from.  I also learned that if my “work” served a purpose….that is, gave me a reason to get up in the morning….and was a way I could be of service to others I enjoyed it even more.

Others have discovered this also which is why I encourage people to “Refire …. not Retire”.  Here’s a little video that I believe tells the story quite well. Enjoy.  “Refire Don’t Retire”.
